Wonder Woman Movie Quotes

“May we get what we want, may we get what we need, but may we never get what we deserve”.

Those words from a movie playing on the TV yesterday interestingly struck me. I honestly have no idea of the movie title or the plot (until I googled it now for this post), but those words kept ringing in my head as I loaded the clothes in the washing machine.

I understand the desire or prayer to get what we want alongside what we need, I mean isn’t that our dream. Beyond having our needs, we aspire and hopefully work towards meeting our wants. Interestingly, wants can range from craving a meal at your favourite restaurant to a nice car that passes you (especially when you live in a luxurious city as Dubai). It could also be wanting or desiring something for others, as we hope for basic human rights and safety for the people of Afghanistan. Whatever they be, and however they range, almost every human can relate to having wants and needs.

Now referring to the opening quote, you can get a sense of why those words bothered me. While we may not always get what we want or need, we often want to get what we deserve (or think we deserve). How would you feel if you realized that you were the least paid member of your team in which everyone does the same job? Would you keep showing up at a job that consistently didn’t deliver on what you deserve if you had a choice? Would you continually work with a client who always paid or treated you less than deserve?

While I don’t have the context of the movie quote, I don’t see myself making such a proclamation to myself or with others. As humans, we deserve the basic needs (used to be food, shelter and clothing) but some will argue they’ve been revised to (smartphone, data and access to social media lol).

As we step into the new week, may we not only get what we want and what we need, but also what we desire. Remember Mark 11:24 in the King James version says “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them”. This is my prayer for you this week, that we will have our desires as we pray and believe.

PS: My younger sister passed the screening from last week and has now proceeded to contest in the elections *fingers crossed*
