Blessings even while you sleep

Hello,

Happy new month of September, and trust this meets you well.

Today, we’ll be reviewing a Bible verse I read recently and believe will bless you. This is from the 2nd verse of the 127th chapter of the book of Psalms which says “It is vain for you to rise early, To retire late, To eat the bread of anxious labors — For He gives [blessings] to His beloved even in his sleep”.

As you may expect, I took a screen grab from some of my favorite versions below and hope they bless you.

Psalm 127

While the Amplified version is quite explicit, I find the comparison between the King James Version (KJV) and The Passion Translation (TPT) interesting. Regardless of whether “God can provide for His devoted lovers even while they sleep” as the TPT puts it, or “He giveth His beloved sleep” as KJV says, my message to you is that God is able to provide for us, both materially and with sleep!

This post is in no way to encourage laziness or indolence. In fact, the same Bible says in

  • 2 Thessalonians 3:10 AMP “For even while we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either.”
  • 1 Timothy 5:8 AMP “If anyone fails to provide for his own, and especially for those of his own family, he has denied the faith [by disregarding its precepts] and is worse than an unbeliever [who fulfills his obligation in these matters].”

In addition to these verses, Jesus our perfect example said “My Father worketh hitherto, and I work” in John 5:17 (KJV). Thus, we should work to ensure we have food to eat, do not deny the faith and live like Christ among others.

Hence, the objective is to remind us not to put our trust in earthly riches or wear ourselves out to acquire material possessions, particularly as we begin the month of September which draws us closer to the end of the year and we start evaluating the goals we earlier set.

The Bible says in Luke 11:13 that “if we been evil know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more God”? While He is the Alpha & Omega and the Creator of the Heaven & earth, He is also our Heavenly Father who knows us more than we know ourselves and has our best interests at heart.

My closing charge to you is to trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your understanding.
